- How do I apply for a job in the federal public service?

The federal public service employment site, jobs-emplois.gc.ca , provides access to employment opportunities to the federal public service.However, some Departments such as the Canada Revenue Agency  do their own recruitment, this means job openings from these  departments are not posted  on the jobs-emplois.gc.ca, they are only posted at their web sites. The list of of these Departments and agencies are listed here.

- Is there a guide ?

Yes, there is an official guide on how to apply for a job in the federal public service, the guide is  valuable and informative for anyone who wants to break into the federal public service.

- Do I have to be a Canadian citizen to apply?

Preference will be given to Canadian citizens, however, permanent resident can also apply.

- Are there tests or examinations?

Most vacancy announcements require the candidate to pass a standardized test or written examination  before the job interview. Some standardized tests from the Public Service Commission can be found here. Candidates may also be assessed with a written  examination, for example, after I applied for a software programming job with the  Library and Archives Canada, they requested me to pass a three-hour test in Ottawa. Basically, the questions were based on the job description and requirements. 

Some job opportunities may require candidates to have  a second official languages qualification.

- What does "Geographic location" mean?

The geographic location describes the individuals from whom the department will accept applications to compete for the position. The geographic location  may also be referred to as "Who Can Apply " within the job description. If you are not within the area of consideration, the department will not consider your application.

- If I am found to be qualified, will I get an interview?

Ministries develop their own procedures for interview practices. The decision to interview may depend on a variety of factors, including your ranking against other candidates, the number of positions being filled, and the number of people who applied.

- How to Get Ready for the Job Interview?

There is an interview practice.

- How about the interview itself ?

The candidate will be interviewed by an assessment board for about 3 hours (you have a 5 minutes break after each hour). The assessment board is composed of managers and executives of the department.
